BEEHIVES
Meadows Hives in Accoya
Our Accoya Hives are long or horizontal hives, inspired by the NOOCHII HIVE from the UK, designed
with advice from Mark, owner of NOOCHII HIVES and adapted for Australian conditions.
Each Accoya hive is made to order, in our Joondalup furniture maker’s workshop. Each Accoya Hive
can be customised to your preferences by selecting from a series of optional features.
We aim for our hives to be : Environmentally friendly: Bee Friendly : People friendly
Accoya is a modified natural timber with a 50 year above ground life. It does not require painting,
and all hardware in contact with the Accoya is stainless steel or aluminium making this a “Hive for
Life”
These hives are “flat packable” so can be shipped Australia wide in semi knockdown and can be
assembled with a hex key and a screwdriver.
These long hives have shading roof eaves and insulation in the roof, as well as option of insulation
sandwiched within the hive walls or 45 mm thick solid accoya walls.

Features included in all our Accoya Hives
• The hives are made with Accoya – an acetylides natural timber, with enhanced hardness,
insulating properties and durability, sustainably grown in plantations. The roof and internal
division are marine ply.
• These hives are a Horizontal or Long hive with space for 27-30 Langstroth frames
• The Accoya hives are easy to work as the Hives are at a good working height of 715mm
measured at the top of the crown boards.
• The hives are easy to open as the roof is hinged and fitted with gas struts, there is space to
allow for winter feeders if needed.
• All hives have two viewing windows, measuring approximately 285x150mm with 6 mm
Perspex rebated into the inside of the hive, as standard.
• The roof top has eaves on all aspects for shade and is made with marine ply covered with
corrugated iron, like any self-respecting Aussie outback home. The roof is edged with
aluminum profiles to cover any sharp edges and provide.
• The roofs are all insulated, and the edge profile includes a “guttering “ feature which means
water will fall away from the hive walls.
• The “Crown boards” are made of 6 mm Perspex with feeder holes, timber covers, and
ventilation covers for summer, so you can see the bees working without disturbing them – I
guess the bees will watch you too.
• Stainless steel lid catches to secure the roof.
• We supply a framed Queen excluder and a hive divider board.
• There is a single screened 25mm round roof vent which can be plugged with a cork. More
vents can be added on request.
• There are 3 Noochii special bee entries towards each end of the back of the hive. These
have a 25 mm diameter hole with internal webs.
• Landing boards below the entry holes.
• The floors are mesh with “varroa” boards below, which can be moved between summer and
winter to open or close the floor for ventilation.
• The legs are powder coated steel hairpin legs. These can be stood in tins filled with your
favorite ant deterrent.
• There is space below the frames, should you wish to fit extra insulation in very cold areas.
Optional features
• Additional observational Perspex windows can be added in the walls with double thickness
timber doors. You can then watch the bees from a different angle. Great for kids too.
• “969” Accoya Hives are made “FLOW FRAME READY”. Roughly holds 9 brood frames, 9 store
frames and 6 flow frames. These are fitted with a key slot and flow cutout doors and
storage for tubes and the Flow Key within the roof space.
• The positioning of the flow frames can be chosen – the demo hive has the flow frames
located centrally, but the flow frames could be towards the end rather than central
• A fold-down shelf can be fitted into the flow frame door to hold bottles.
• Additional roof vents can be fitted, and entrance positions can be altered if you so wish.
• Roof upgrade – the ply roof base can be fitted with an aluminium cover in place of the
framed corrugated iron.
• The hive can be personalised with pyrography (burning) messages and designs of your own
